Nazi Germany- The Police State (Gestapo)
The Gestapo were the Nazis' secret police force, led by Reinhard Heydrich, and was probably the most feared fraternity out of them all. For one, they were camouflaged amongst the citizens, not wearing the proper police uniforms that picks them out. They had contacts in almost every street, building and even classroom, people who were easily bribed or blackmailed being the main types. Almost every telephone and contact device in Germany was being monitored by the Gestapo and few things people said couldn't be heard. The Gestapo were the prime reason why so many opposers of the Nazis were caught.
The Gestapo's main strength was being able to infiltrate the mind; they didn't wear the proper uniforms of Hitler's thugs, so they could eavesdrop on people easily. Many people later related harshness with the Gestapo such as an American, Tommy Bond. "I said to myself, where are we living? In the United States of America where you're innocent until proven guilty, or Nazi Germany with the Gestapo calling?"
The Gestapo were by far the most deadly Nazi terror group as they could get personal secrets and alliances almost instantaneously. The Nazi regime was not very popular and small talk was everywhere; you just had to blend in to listen to the gossip. And that was exactly what the Gestapo did. Informers were everywhere, and there were few places where the Gestapo didn't lurk.
To sum up, the Nazi Police State was made strong by blending into the civilian population. This was how mutinies and insurgences were defeated so quickly; no secret was kept from the Nazis.
